This super big scarf is super versatile – wear it as a shawl for an autumn chill, or as a toasty scarf that will stand up to a January freeze.
This is an easy, beginner-friendly pattern that uses just one stitch, and works up in a hot minute thanks to the super bulky yarn. I used Lion Brand Hometown yarn which is just luscious! It’s as soft as it looks and has a nice sheen to it. No, I don’t work for Lion Brand – I just happen to LOVE this yarn – but any super bulky 6 weight yarn of your choice will work.
Finished Size – 14″ x 74″
Materials
- Super chunky weight yarn (#6) – about 620 yards
- M / 9.0 mm crochet hook
- 1 1/2″ button (optional)
Sample was made with 8 skeins of Lion Brand Hometown in “Springfield Silver.”
Gauge
8 sts and 5.5 rows per 4 inches in pattern stitch
Gauge, sizes, and yardage are approximate and will vary depending on the actual yarn and hook used, and individual tension.
Abbreviations
chain (ch) – stitch (st) – slip stitch (slst) – single crochet (sc)
half double crochet (hdc)
Pattern Repeat
Multiples of 2 + 1, plus 2 for the foundation chain.
Use this formula to alter the size. For example, the starting chain for this blanket is 139, that’s a multiple of 2 x 68 = 136, + 1 = 137 (the actual number of sts worked), + 2 (to count as the 1st hdc) = 139.
Notes
- Ch 2 at the beginning of each row counts as an hdc.
- There are no buttonholes written into the pattern. The spaces created by the skipped stitches throughout the pattern serve as buttonholes.
Foundation Chain
Chain 139
Row 1
- Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook (2 skipped chs count as the 1st hdc).
- Hdc in the next ch and in each ch across. (137 sts)
Row 2
- Ch 2, turn. Skip the 1st hdc. Two hdc in the next hdc.
- Skip the next hdc, 2 hdc in the next hdc.
- Repeat step 2 across to the last hdc and tch. Skip the last hdc; hdc in the tch.
Repeat row 2 until the piece measures about 13.5”.
Last Row
Ch 2; hdc in the 1st hdc and in each hdc across. Do not work a st into the tch. Do not fasten off.
Edging
- Ch 1, turn your piece to begin working across the short end of the scarf. Work an odd number of sc across. Fasten off.
- Join yarn with a sl st in the corner st of the other short end. Ch 1, sc in the same st. Continue working the same number of sc as in step 1. Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.
Finishing
Attach two 16” strands of yarn in every other stitch for the fringe.
Optional – Sew a button to the center of the scarf about 1/3 of the way from one short edge.
All the best!
